Hospital and Specialist Referral Process

Important Update – From 31 August 2026
The Referral Management Centre (RMC) will no longer be available from 31st August 2026. This means there is a small change to how you book hospital and specialist appointments after being referred by your GP.
What happens if I need a referral?
Your GP will continue to refer you to hospital and specialist services in the same way as before using the NHS e-Referral Service (eRS).
How do I select a provider?
When your referral has been processed by our secretarial team, you will be notified via text message or phone call.
To select your provider, you can choose from two options:
Option 1: Using the NHS App or NHS Account
Log in to the NHS App or your NHS Account online.
Click on ‘Appointments’
Click on ‘Hospital and specialist appointments’
Click on the referral and choose a location / service provider that suits you.
Option 2: Directly through your GP surgery
If you cannot use the NHS App, please let your us know and the surgery can book the appointment on your behalf.
